Anthony Laffor says Mamelodi Sundowns are looking to surpass the 60-point mark this season, to ensure they defend the Absa Premiership title for the first time under coach Pitso Mosimane.
Sundowns finished top of the standings for an unprecedented eighth time in PSL history last term, five points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates after 30 matches.
They are yet to defend the league title whenever they’ve won it with Mosimane, but they are looking to change that this season. They’ve collected four out of a possible six points in their first two matches, and have an opportunity to register their second consecutive victory when they take on Highlands Park at Loftus Stadium this evening (19h30).
In fact, not since Orlando Pirates' double-treble winning side has a club defended the league title.
“It’s not only Sundowns, even other teams who won the PSL title it’s like that for them, but it’s something that we need to change. And we can change it by winning our games,” Laffor told KickOff.com.
“When we won the league [in 2015/16] we had 71 points and last season we had 60 points. This season if we want to keep that we need to get more points and that’s what we are working on. We have a good technical team and they are working on that, so we will see what happens.”
Laffor is itching to get more opportunities upfront this season after struggling with injuries last term.
