Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy sings the same tune as last season

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy admits he is frustrated by the perennial goal-scoring problem that has plagued his club since his arrival, and knows his charges need to up their game.

City played out a dire 0-0 draw against Golden Arrows over the weekend in an encounter littered with missed chances in front of goal, an aspect of the game McCarthy had specifically worked on in the week leading up to the fixture.

South Africa’s all-time top scorer, who sang the same tune last season when his side netted just 26 goals in their 30 league games, could not help but raise his voice over the same problem once more.

“It was a frustrating evening‚” the City coach said. “It’s evident that we are a team that uses the ball well‚ we move it around quite nicely.

“We create chances, but then the almighty of almighties … putting it in the back of the net.

“During the week I was so confident that it was a given for us that we would get the three points because of the quality of the finishing in training in front of goals.

“But on Saturday it was just the complete opposite.

“I’m disappointed with our lack of keeping our composure in key elements in the game.

“We let them off the hook because this was the easiest three-pointer we could have gotten this far‚ but we come away with a draw only. We must go back now and work on scoring goals.”

McCarthy was incensed that his side did not make Arrows shot-stopper Nkosingiphile Gumede earn his keep, and knows his strikeforce will need to up their game ahead of Saturday’s MTN8 clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.

“We are just missing that calmness and composure in front of goal where we should have made it count,” he continued. “We didn’t even make the goalkeeper make a save – that for me is the worst. Of all our chances, we didn’t make him work once.

“So this week will be about recovering, and then working on our attacking play in front of goal.”
