Bloemfontein Celtic coach Steve Komphela expressed little surprise over their victory over Orlando Pirates as he lauded his players’ flawless execution of their tactical plan.
Celtic are currently the only side with a perfect record in the 2018/19 season, having won all three of their Absa Premiership encounters thus far.
Phunya Sele Sele sit pretty as joint-leaders with Bidvest Wits, who have played an extra game, with nine points on the board after condemning The Buccaneers to a 1-0 defeat on Sunday.
The Free State-based outfit put out a disciplined display as they also managed their third consecutive clean sheet, as they thwarted attack after attack from the Soweto giants.
Komphela felt better usage of their opportunities could have even resulted in a more convincing win for the hosts, but nonetheless credited his charges for the final result.
“I think the biggest thing was the result. They [the players] just got themselves nine points, did not concede again,” Komphela told the media after the match.
“And you could see there were moments where they wanted to play freely but you understand that you’re playing against a team like Pirates, who play at high speed so you need to be highly concentrated.
“But it was clear from the onset that it was going to be a measured game, a game of respect from both teams. And I thought we could have maybe buried one or two more chances to make it 2-0 or 3-0.”
While statistics would show that it wasn’t a one-sided affair, as Pirates dominated possession particularly in the second half, the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor was more than willing to concede the ball in unthreatening areas and praised the displays of several ‘on-form’ individuals.
“With respect, they also gave us hard times and we gave them the ball in areas where we knew we could deal with it – balls dropping wide, whether on the left or right, and then we got ready to defend. That’s why you ended up with [Alfred] Ndengane as man of the match,” he added.
“I thought [Tebogo] Potsane did extremely well; I thought Bongani [Sam] the left-back did very well, and [Lorenzo] Gordinho as well as [Tshepo] Rikhotso … The overall performance of the team was tops and we’re delighted with that.
“So, if you have about seven or eight players in good form then possibilities are that you’ll get a result. We’re happy with the result.”
