Ajax Cape Town coach Muhsin Ertugral knows his side are in for a tough time in their first National First Division encounter against Jomo Cosmos.
The Urban Warriors will kick-off their first-ever NFD match in Vosloorus against a side that missed promotion to the Absa Premiership after falling short in the play-offs, and against an opponent coached by a legend who Ertugral is well-acquainted with.
“I know Jomo well, he’s a personal friend of mine and someone I respect a lot,” Ertugral said. “At the moment we can’t say much – it’s not like in the PSL where you know your opponents, you only hear stories, but I know he has a competitive team – he always has a competitive team as he was always competitive himself, so I know it will be a tough game there.”
Ertugral says the off-season proved a difficult time for his side, who were in limbo and unable to efficiently prepare, not knowing in which league they would be participating and which of their players would still be at the club.
“It’s always difficult to prepare a team if you don’t know what is ahead of you,” he said. “When the fixtures come out late and you don’t know what you are going to do, and how to have proper periodisation – today football is about science, and you have to look into the science factor and how you can prepare the team.
“So for me it was very difficult, trying to prepare the team not knowing where we were, who we could keep, and dealing with the player’s mental state after we were relegated. Seven or eight players left us, and one that hurt the most for me was Mosa [Lebusa], but quite understandably as he’s hot property in South African football.
“So it felt like we were swimming in the ocean, but we didn’t know in which direction.”
Kick-off between Cosmos and Ajax is set for Sunday ay 3pm.
