Shu-Aib backs Muhsin Ertugral to lead Ajax Cape Town to promotion

Ajax Cape Town recruit Shu-Aib Walters is confident that coach Muhsin Ertugral will restore credibility at the NFD club by overseeing their immediate return to the PSL.

Walters, 36, penned a one-year deal with Ajax with an option after his contract was not renewed by Cape Town City at the end of last season.

It remains to be seen how Ertugral will utilise the ageing goalkeeper, who he previously worked with at the now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces, given that he also has Brandon Petersen and Jody February at his disposal.

"Look, Ajax is obviously a big club in terms of what they do for the young, talented players of Cape Town and Africa, and this is something no one can deny," Walters tells "That's why it's imperative for the club to win promotion back to the PSL.

“The vision of the boss [Ari Efstathiou] as well as the coach is to keep on progressing despite the challenges thrown at them. Knowing coach Muhsin, he's someone that does not back down from a challenge as he comes with a big reputation and experience. Therefore the coach will be eager to prove a point - especially to himself, you know.

“It's with this in mind that I'm confident that coach Muhsin will turn things around and restore credibility at the club, and even bring back the glory days," says the former Maritzburg United stalwart, who played over 100 matches for the Team of Choice.

Meanwhile, Walters is still hungry for success as a veteran.

"Look, the last few seasons have been some of the best of my career, you know. I set goals for tasting success in a cup competition, which I did. I was also a nominee for Goalkeeper of the Season, which meant a lot to me. The Bafana Bafana call-up I received was also a sense of achievement that my work I'm doing does not go unnoticed.

"My other objective is to win a league title and by the looks of things I can still achieve this with Ajax. It may not be a PSL title, but I'll settle for NFD league success, as a winner's league medal remains just that. Who knows, maybe this season I can achieve my objective with Ajax if we win the NFD title," Walters concludes.
