Baroka FC coach Wedson Nyirenda says their performance against Kaizer Chiefs has given them the confidence they need heading into this weekend’s Limpopo derby against Polokwane City.
Baroka put on a brilliant performance in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Amakhosi at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday, putting the visitors under pressure, especially on the left flank where Zimbabwean winger Talent Chawapihwa was operating.
City, meanwhile, have not made a good start to the campaign as they continue to search for their first victory following a 2-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last time out.
The two sides meet at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday (15h00). Hosts City are bottom of the table, while Baroka are in fifth place.
“They [City] may have not started well, but they are playing good football. All they need is to get a point or a win and their confidence will come for them,” Nyirenda said.
“We were blessed with the last two fixtures [against Chiefs and Cape Town City]. We played big teams and the glamorous one against Kaizer Chiefs, which the players showed character against big guys. That has given us a lot of confidence to play. It will be difficult now to choose the players, because everyone is confident. They know they can play.”
It will be Nyirenda’s first derby against Rise and Shine, a chance for him to start off on a good note in an encounter that has not produced a winner in two seasons in the Absa Premiership.
“To be frank I have not seen a Polokwane derby and this is my first time. I am on the boat and I have to paddle the boat,” the Zambian said.
