FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi issued a statement over being named club captain since the departure of club legend Andres Iniesta.
The Argentine star won his 33rd trophy with Barca last week when they lifted the Spanish Supercopa against Sevilla and now leads them in an official capacity for the first time.
Ahead of the 3-0 victory over Boca Juniors in the Joan Gamper trophy, in which Brazilian duo Rafinha, Malcom and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored he revealed his pride of the honour bestowed upon him.
"I'm very proud to be captain, I know what it means to be captain of this club," Messi told fans in attendance at the Camp Nou.
"I have been lucky to have such great models in my time here; firstly with Carles Puyol, then Xavi Hernandez and then the great Andres Iniesta.
"We will miss him this season, but I will not shy away from this responsibility."
