Atletico Madrid's Nikola Kalinic explains 2018 FIFA World Cup medal snub and expulsion from squad

Croatia striker Nikola Kalinic explained the surprising 2018 FIFA World Cup medal snub after completing his move to Atletico Madrid from AC Milan.

Kalinic made global headlines during the global showpiece in Russia after being sent home by manager Zlatko Dalic after refusing to come on as a substitute in the opening fixture against Nigeria.

And with his nation going all the way to the final, as a member of the 23-man squad that was submitted, the former Fiorentina striker was eligible for a runner-up medal.

However, since the €14.5m switch to Atleti, the 30-year-old has finally broken his silence over the ordeal.

"What happened at the World Cup happened," Kalinic said, as quoted by ESPN."The coach did not want to count on me and I accepted that.

"I did not want the medal as I did not contribute during the tournament, did not share in the achievement of the team. We can leave it behind now."
