Former Wits players to haunt Hunt?

Posted: 14 August 2018 Time: 15:00

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt will be coming up against three of his old boys when they take on Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, making for an even more exciting match-up.

Midfielders Xola Mlambo, Vincent Pule and Ben Motshwari were all part of The Clever Boys’ historic Absa Premiership success just 15 months ago, but they will all now be expected to bring the table-toppers down.

Mlambo has been a key figure in the centre of the park for The Buccaneers since his arrival in January, featuring in all but one of their fixtures in the second half of last season.

This season he has picked up where he left off, collecting two Man of the Match awards in his opening two league matches against Highlands Park and Chippa United thus far.

‘Ten-ten’ is currently the leading defensive breakdown figure for Pirates, having managed the most tackles (4) and second-most blocks (8), and will undoubtedly be a thorn in the side of Hunt’s attack on Wednesday evening.

While Pule has yet to break his duck at the Mayfair-based outfit, the winger proved his worth at Wits as he managed three crucial goals in 15 league starts last season, and he has already won the faith of coaches Milutin Sredojevic and Rhulani Mokwena with three starts from three this season.

The lanky 26-year-old is also knocking at the door, averaging the team’s second-highest number of shots at goal per 90 minutes both from inside and outside the box thus far.

Motshwari, meanwhile, only just made his Bucs debut over the weekend, but his knack for getting around the park could pose a tough test for Wits’ on-form front-line, should he get the nod.

The diminutive workhorse together with Mlambo managed a combined 257 touches of the ball, while he registered an impressive accuracy of 95 percent of his 105 attempted passes, against SuperSport United on Saturday.

However, with a wealth of knowledge on their capabilities, Hunt will be determined to chop the trio’s legs out from under them in order to maintain their 100 percent record thus far.

Having won two from two and scored six goals, while conceding just one, Wits have their tails up against Pirates, who are on the rebound following their MTN8 heartbreak over the weekend.
