Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says SuperSport United should give Kaitano Tembo enough time to prove himself in the head coaching role.
Mosimane coached Tembo during the Zimbabwean’s playing days at SuperSport and they know each other very well.
Tembo has served diligently as an assistant coach at Matsatsantsa in the past, and following his good work last season after Eric Tinkler parted ways with the club, management felt he is the right man to take charge this season.
Tembo’s story is similar to that of Mosimane, who started as a scout at the club before he became an assistant coach. He was then made the head coach and did a great job in the hotseat.
Tembo has made a decent start, with two victories in three matches in all competitions.
“He must hang in there. They must give him a chance, the same chance they gave to Stuart Baxter. I remember we beat them 5-0 with Stuart and he was never removed. So give Kaitano a chance also, like you gave Cavin Johnson a chance, like you gave Gordon [Igesund] a chance. So they must give him a chance.
“For blacks sometimes the guillotine is close to your neck. One loss, one draw and you say ‘no we don’t have confidence in this guy’. It’s important for me to fight for our local coaches. Anybody can come from Belgium or whatever and he gets 12 games, but our brothers here ... you know the story of Chippa with Dan Malesela. It’s very tough for the local coaches.”
