Mamelodi Sundowns winger Lyle Lakay disappointed to miss out on CAF registration

Mamelodi Sundowns’ pre-season signing Lyle Lakay has explained how disappointed he was when he found out that he is ineligible to play in this year’s CAF Champions League.
Lakay played in the Confederation Cup with Cape Town City in the preliminary rounds, so he is cup-tied and therefore will have to watch his club’s games from the sidelines. CAF does not allow players to represent different clubs in continental club competitions in the same year.
Lakay found out that he is cup-tied when he was trying to register for the competition.
“Who does not want to win the Champions League? I want to be there, but for now I can’t because I am cup-tied. I played for Cape Town City in the Confederation Cup. I will be available for the next Champions League and hopefully I will be able to contribute,” Lakay tells KickOff.com.
“It’s disappointing because when I came here I did my medical and I was told I should do my CAF medical and all that. On the week we were about to play AS Togo-Port, I got told that I am cup-tied. I also did not know, I forgot about it. It’s disappointing, but it’s life and we have to deal with it.”
