Kabelo Mahlasela was naturally pleased to make his belated Kaizer Chiefs debut against Bidvest Wits on Tuesday following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The midfielder came on for Leonardo Castro as a 77th minute substitute in the 3-1 defeat at FNB Stadium.
Mahlasela joined Chiefs in January from Bloemfontein Celtic, but suffered a knee injury in his first training session and missed the rest of 2017/18.
Having featured in the Maize Cup and Mpumalanga Cultural Xperience Cup in pre-season, Mahlasela finally made his official bow against the Clever Boys.
“It felt good to wear the gold and black jersey for the first time in an official match. It was an honour and a privilege,” Mahlasela told his club's website.
The 27-year-old admits his time out was hard to accept.
“That was tough because the fans expected me to play, but I couldn’t due to the injury. I am happy to be now fully fit.”
He believes Amakhosi, who drew their season opener with champions Mamelodi Sundowns, could have beaten the Students in their second league game of the campaign.
“We could have won,” said. “We created more chances than them, but it wasn’t to me.”
The Glamour Boys next host Nedbank Cup champions Free State Stars at the same venue in the MTN8 quarter-finals, with Mahlasela insisting the Soweto giants are the stronger team.
“It’s a cup game, so we have to win or we are out. There are no second chances.
“But we are the stronger side and we will fight as a team to make it to the next round.”
Kick-off is at 18h00 at Soccer City on Saturday.
