Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says he still can’t understand why Kaizer Chiefs let go of Steve Komphela.
Komphela left Amakhosi in April after a defeat to Free State Stars in the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup. He left Naturena without a trophy to add to his CV.
Now coach of Bloemfontein Celtic, Komphela has started well with two victories in as many Absa Premiership matches, despite their off-field problems.
Mosimane says he always feels the need to fight for local coaches because they sometimes do not get a fair chance to prove themselves in the top flight of South African football.
“I just fight for our local coaches. It’s important for me to fight for our local coaches and to say it because if we don’t make it, then no one trusts them,” Mosimane says.
“I have always been vocal about Steve. He did not do bad. They finished third and he’s done very well. Why was he removed? For me I just don’t understand. Steve played against us and they won last season. They came third, that’s Confederation Cup. How bad can that be guys? I think Steve was sacrificed early.”
Mosimane added: “I hope he does well at Bloemfontein Celtic and we can realise that this guy was not bad.”
