Ten-man Orlando Pirates got their first three points of the Absa Premiership season with a 1-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday night.
The Buccaneers were probing for an early goal in the opening ten minutes, but they were crowded by the over eager United rearguard.
However, the Bucs were ahead in the 16th minute thanks to an own goal by Gaona Modisane who deflected a rebound into his own net after a stunning free-kick by Justin Shonga that came off the underside of the crossbar.
Milutin Sredojevic’s charges had the momentum after 25 minutes but they could not really open the game in the last third.
On the other hand, The Chilli Boys could not combine going forward and the more they got foward, the more they opened themselves up at the back, although Pirates were unable to capatilise.
That proved to be the trend for the rest of the half as the visitors went into the break leading by the lone goal.
Daine Klate had a chance to equalise for United four minutes after the break with a free-kick from the edge of the box, but his effort was smothered by Bucs shot-stopper Siyabonga Mpontshane.
Vincent Pule should have doubled the lead for Bucs in the 62nd minute with a glorious chance at the back post but the Chilli Boys goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi made a crucial save.
The Buccaneers were reduced to ten men 20 minutes before time after Mthokozisi Dube was sent off receiving his second yellow card for time-wasting.
The Chilli Boys started feeling confident with ten minutes left to play as they pressurised the visitors in search of an equaliser.
Frederic Nsabiyumva almost equalised for the hosts five minutes before time with a glancing header at close range, but Mpontshane produced a good save.
Ruzaigh Gamildien had two great chances to equalise for the Chilli Boys in the closing minutes but Mpontshane preserved all the three points for Bucs.
