Kaitano Tembo outlines SuperSport United’s target for the season

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo has outlined where he hopes the club will end up at the end of the season, and is desperate not to repeat the dismal slide of the last campaign.
Despite strong runs into the finals of both continental and domestic cup competitions, SuperSport’s league campaign bore the brunt of their taxing season as the Pretoria club narrowly escaped relegation on the last day of the season, before eventually profiting from Ajax Cape Town’s docked points ruling to be bumped up into the top eight.
And although they finished in the top eight on paper, Tembo knows his side need to step up their performances this season as they look to rise to their heights of seasons past.
“We want to do well and do better than last season,” the head coach said. “Last season we left it a bit too late – people may say we didn’t do well, but we finished seventh, won the MTN8 and got to the final of the Confed Cup, so for me it wasn’t a bad season. We want to be challenging for the top three, and be a bit more comfortable in the league and not be fighting relegation – that’s where we don’t want to be. That’s our target, without anyone mentioning it – that’s standard for every club.”
SuperSport are already on the back foot following their opening day loss to Cape Town City, and will look to make amends in tonight’s clash at home to AmaZulu.
“We have to be a bit more adventurous, especially at home,” Tembo said. “Obviously we will need fresh legs, as it’s quite difficult for some players now who just came back like Bradley [Grobler], who missed eight months of football. This was his first game [against City], so he can’t play another in just three days and will need rest, so that’s where James [Keene] comes in. [Teboho] Mokoena is also back from suspension, so we’ll have fresh legs for the next game.”
Kick-off at Lucas Moripe Stadium is set for 19h30.
