Orlando Pirates winger Luvuyo Memela is happy to have Asavela Mbekile as his teammate after they both failed trials at Ajax Cape Town more than 10 years ago.
Mbekile joined the Buccaneers from defending Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns after his contract with the Chloorkop outfit expired at the end of June.
Both Memela and Mbekile did not feature in Pirates’ opening league match of the season against Highlands Park at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, but they will be hoping to make a contribution going forward, especially after the difficulties they had trying to make it big in the game of football.
“We come a long way. At that time I was turning 19 when we went to Ajax. I think we were on trial for about five months. At the time Ajax were coached by Craig Rosslee,” the 30-year-old said.
“We also went to Swallows, FC Cape Town, Cape Town All Stars. After Cape Town All Stars, we went to Chippa. So we’ve been close friends. We still visit each almost three to four times a week. So we are still close.”
Memela is unlikely to feature when the Buccaneers take on Chippa United in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, after sustaining an injury late last season.
“I just need to get back to match fitness,” said the winger, who was Pirates' top scorer with five goals last season.
