Celtic hand Komphela winning start

Bloemfontein Celtic opened their 2018/19 Absa Premiership season with a 2-0 win over Chippa United on Sunday.

Off to a slow start, Celtic stifled the first shot on goal when Tshegofatso Mabasa tried to score from a tight angle but he could only find the side-netting.

Slowly, Chippa grew as the game went by and Kurt Lentjies handed them the first opening at goal, but he was unable to beat Patrick Tignyemb from close range.

Chippa made a surprising early change, bringing on new signing Thamsanqa Sangweni for Chris Komane on 35 minutes.

Following a dry spell on either side, Celtic took the lead after debutant Tebogo Potsane burst through the defence to poke past Daniel Akpeyi five minutes to halftime.

Chippa's plans for a comeback was taken aback when Mabasa doubled the hosts lead from the penalty spot early in the second half.

As veteran Daine Klate entered for Chippa, the duck wasn’t able to move nor did Klate’s experience inspire any sort of confidence to the team.

Celtic failed to kill off the game though as substitute Victor Letsoaloa was sent one-on-one with Akpeyi but attempts to lob him proved null with Ndumiso Mabena unable to turn in the rebound.

Lentjies almost reduced the deficit for the Chilli Boys, but his cross cum-shot was well thwarted by Patrick Tignyemb who tipped it over the top to see out the win.
