New Cape Town City signing Siphelele Mthembu says he has nothing to prove at the Citizens

Striker Siphelele Mthembu says he’s got nothing to prove as he looks to rediscover his goal-scoring boots at new club Cape Town City.

READ: ‘City can win the PSL this season’

The 30-year-old was unveiled as one of City’s new acquisitions in the off-season, as the club looked to bolster their blunt attack which failed to fire last campaign.

Mthembu is somewhat of a nomad, having now joined a seventh different club in his last nine years in the PSL, with his highest league return being the six goals he scored for Platinum Stars in the 2013/14 campaign.

Yet despite the numbers and his numerous critics, “Shaka Zulu” insists he has nothing to prove as he chooses to see his past in a positive light.

“I’m a hard worker – I push a lot and am very dedicated in what I do,” he said. “For me, it’s not about proving to people how good I am, but it’s about helping the team I play for. Now I’m looking forward to making history with a good team. I take my past as a positive, something that will push me to say, ‘If they say something, let them say that’. Personally, I’m just there in my zone, focused and remaining positive about life.”

At City he now finds himself playing alongside former Orlando Pirates teammate Teko Modise and under Bafana Bafana’s all-time top scorer Benni McCarthy, two star names he feels will help push him to greater heights.

“It’s a bonus for me as I know them, and they are very supportive,” he said. “They can be aggressive at time in pushing you to work harder. Hard work here is key; I have lots to learn, and am here to create a new environment for the next generation at Cape Town City, and we need to start that now.”

Silverware is something Mthembu definitely hopes he can help City achieve this campaign.

“I’m hoping to win one or two cups here,” he said. “We have good players, a good coach and everyone here has a winning mentality.”

Mthembu lasted 65 minutes on his debut for City but failed to find the back of the net in their 2-0 victory against SuperSport United on Saturday.
