KickOff.com editor Tshepang Mailwane gives his verdict on the new Nike Phantom VSN after getting an exclusive test of the boot, ahead of its official release.

The new Phanton VSN is a very stylish, innovative boot launched by Nike South Africa last month, and I had the privilege of feeling it out before it hits select stores today, August 2.

Alternatively, the Phantom VSN boots is now available online at www.nike.com.

At first glance, the design and intricate detail of the Phanton VSN struck me as the type of boot only the most elite athletes would wear – the likes of Phillipe Coutinho or Kevin De Bruyne.

The colours are unique, in that grey boots aren’t very prominent, while the red triangle on the in-step is enough to make it stand out and get you noticed.

Design: 5/5

The advanced Quadfit technology used to ensure a comfortable fit is evident from the moment you insert your foot – from the seamless entry to the lace-up, it feels really good.

Upon discovering the “ghost lace system”, which is hidden under the Flyknit upper, I realised how easy it is to lace the boot up with just a single tug, rather than individually tightening each strand for that tight, snug fit.

My first feel of the boot was obviously through a few warm-up drills, during which I got to feel the durability and comfort in motion – it literally hugs your foot and allows you maximum range of motion without any awkward space for your foot to slip around.

Comfort: 4/5

When it came to the actual ball work, I really enjoyed the enhanced control the boot offered with each touch of the ball, whether tapping, trapping or passing.

Striking the ball also felt good, with the cushioning of the upper allowing me to use maximum power for the desired impact and direction, without any sting on my foot.

Control: 5/5

The Phantom VSN truly is a top-level boot for any footballer looking to get the slightest edge over their competition, and obviously provides confidence when strutting your stuff around the pitch.

Overall rating (1 - poor; 5 - world class): 5/5
