Jackson Mabokgwane downplays Orlando Pirates goalkeeping competition

Posted: 2 August 2018 Time: 09:06

Orlando Pirates shot-stopper Jackson Mabokgwane insists he is not concerned by further additions to the team’s goalkeeping department ahead of the new season.

Pirates have again bolstered their last line of defence with the services of Brilliant Khuzwayo from Kaizer Chiefs, after bringing in Wayne Sandilands from Mamelodi Sundowns last year.

Sandilands started out the campaign in fine form last season before an injury led to Mabokgwane and Siyabonga Mpontshane sharing the position between the sticks last season.

With Khuzwayo’s arrival, rotation could be a tall ask for four experienced goalkeepers, thus making competition for the first-choice spot even tougher than the previous campaign.

However, Mabokgwane is adamant his focus will remain solely on improving himself, as he sees his colleagues as partners rather than rivals.

“The season is starting and we’re looking forward to it. Like I’ve always said before on the competition, for me, I don’t view other goalkeepers as competition, we are partners,” said Mabokgwane.

“Of course, I am at a club where I’m employed to do a job and to help the team. I look into my own games and I try to improve from my previous game or the previous season.

“That’s definitely how I look at it. It’s not so much about who else played and [how they performed], I just always analyse my own games and performances and try and do better.”

Khuzwayo has since been ruled out of the start of the season, with Mabokgwane set to compete for a starting berth with Sandilands and Mpontshane ahead of their opening game against Highlands Park at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
