Chiefs released five players including the likes of Tsepo Masilela, Keagan Buchanan and William Twala in June, after promising a ‘complete overhaul’ following yet another underwhelming campaign in which the club failed to win silverware.

Mphahlele, who has now witnessed two ‘overhauls’ at Amakhosi since his arrival from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016, has conceded that the club let go of some quality in the off-season, before revealing the unease he felt seeing his former colleagues get sacked.

“I know we lost players and we lost good players. Some went to other teams and … Look, that’s very difficult for me to answer because I’m a player,” said Mphahlele, when asked of the club’s supposed ‘complete overhaul’.

“It’s not nice to see my fellow teammates without jobs, but ja … it’s a new season, we’re just focusing on the new season, and I can’t comment on players right now.”

The Bafana Bafana right-back has since refused to talk big on their intentions of claiming trophies this season, and says it’s time the players show their supporters what they’re capable of.

“We’ve been talking, talking, talking. I think it’s about time now we actually show them on the pitch to say, look, we’re giving it everything,” he added.

“If we lose giving it everything, then we can just go home and say, ‘You know what, I gave it everything’. But we’ll show it in the pitch.

“There’s no use talking and going on social media, writing, ‘We’re going to win the treble; we’re going to win this’. We have to go and show it on the pitch.

“It’s going to be difficult, but we’re prepared because we’re hurting from last season, so we’ll have a go again.”
