Micho Sredojevic explains Orlando Pirates' appointment of finishing coach

Posted: 1 August 2018 Time: 19:30

Orlando Pirates head coach Milutin Sredojevic has explained the thinking behind the appointment of a coach specialising in finishing, as announced by the club on Wednesday.

Pirates roped in French coach Stéphane Adam to further bolster their technical team, following the departure of assistant coach and former player Benson Mhlongo.

Adam comes with 14 years of European experience as a striker, having plied his trade for clubs such as Lille, FC Metz and Amiens in his homeland, before spending time at Heart of Midlothian FC in Scotland as well.

The 49-year-old tactician joins from a coaching spell at Lille, and has been brought in to improve Pirates' overall tally of 41 goals in 30 league matches last season, in which the club’s top goal scorer Luvuyo Memela managed to find the target on just five occasions.

“As you know, as our chairman [Irvin Khoza] likes to say, we are controlling the happiness index in this country, so with that in mind we cannot leave any stone unturned in so far as taking care of every possible detail to give us an advantage and being trendsetters,” explained 'Micho'.

“In that regard, from all possible angles, we have tried to strengthen ourselves to squeeze the best out of our players and looking at one important factor of individual preparation to serve the team in the best possible way.

“If we want players to do that, we need to lift their technical qualities, especially with the aspect of finishing that has been, not only ours but, a South African problem. We are stretching ourselves over all possible limits in order to be stronger than we have been.

“With that in mind, we’ve taken the bold step to take care of that aspect of the game because, with all that we do, we’re writing a document and putting our signature, but making the stamp is having that conversion ratio and finishing aspect sorted.

“So, this is a step in the right direction and we believe it will help us to be much more effective in front of the goals.”
