Mthembu aware of City expectations

Cape Town City recruit Siphelele Mthembu insists he knows what he has to do at his new club as he looks forward to a fresh challenge in the Mother City.

The former Free State Stars striker is one of the many new faces to have signed for the Citizens in the off-season, joining the likes of Riyaad Norodien, Gift Links, Kouassi Kouadja and Peter Leeuwenburgh at the club.

And Mthembu, who only managed five goals in 28 appearances across all competitions for Ea Lla Koto last season, has only one thing on his mind ahead of his official debut for City this season.

“I’m here to work,” he said. “It’s been good so far. My teammates have been very supportive, and I’ve felt at home. The one thing on my mind is to come in and score goals. I have to work hard though – I have to earn it, and score goals for the team.”

Finding himself working under Bafana Bafana’s all-time top scorer in coach Benni McCarthy, the 30-year-old is enjoying feeding off the head coach, but insists his team’s success supersedes his own.

“The coach is very supportive – he was a striker before so he knows the challenges we face, so it’s just about breaking the ice,” Mthembu said. “But the team is the most important thing: if we create the legacy for the next generation to come and do better, we have to start now by working hard and scoring goals.”

With City’s goal-scoring problems perennially highlighted by McCarthy last season, as Ayanda Patosi finished top of the club’s scoring charts with just four league goals, Mthembu insists he doesn’t feel any added pressure to solve the team’s scoring issues.

“It’s better to work under pressure than being in a comfortable environment,” he said, before hinting at his target for the season. “The net never gets full, so I want to score as much as I can. I’m really hungry to score.”

Mthembu will hope to make his debut on Saturday when City host SuperSport United at Cape Town Stadium. Kick-off is set for 18h00.
