Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso wants the team to play more attacking football under new coach Giovanni Solinas this season.

Chiefs was criticised for playing conservatively in the previous campaign, with former coach Steve Komphela opting to use three centre-backs.

Cardoso prefers a more traditional 4-4-2 formation.

"I think it is better for us playing 4-4-2," said Cardoso.

"Playing with three centre-backs is very hard because those centre-backs are always covering each other and left and right-back.

"Also, when we go down the flanks we bring back our defense so it was not really a 3-5-2 we used to play, more 5-3-2.

"The fans are going to be behind our backs from day one and I think we have to come out and surprise them and start playing more attacking football and stop playing defensive, and I think that will change a lot."

Cardoso has faith the team will do well this season as he feels Italian Solinas will bring a different dimension to their game. The former Free State Stars mentor, who received his work permit on Tuesday, will be expected to get instant results given the Glamour Boys have gone an unprecedented three years without silverware.

"He is a great coach and his philosophy is there. We have not had time to spend with him and he missed three quarters of our pre-season. We wish we worked with him the whole pre-season but unfortunately it was not that way. I think he will change things once the season starts.

"[Patrick] Mabedi tried to influence us in one way and he came and he changed [things as a caretaker coach]. So it is a difficult phase we are going through at the moment but we are getting there slowly. We hope he can change our fortunes."

Amakhosi will visit Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their first game of the season at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (15h00).
