As we prepare for a new season of Absa Premiership football, KickOff.com picks five players who could battle it out for the Golden Boot award this term.
Augustine Mulenga (Orlando Pirates)
The Zambian striker joined the Buccaneers in January and showed that he can be the club’s main source of goals once he is fully settled. He’s got loads of strength to shrug of challenges from defenders and packs a powerful shot. He scored three goals in seven matches last season, which is not a bad return. Imagine what more he can do with more matches under his belt.
Leonardo Castro (Kaizer Chiefs)
The Amakhosi forward is likely to be coach Giovanni Solinas’s most trusted man for goals in the coming campaign. He scored three times after joining the club in January from Mamelodi Sundowns and is probably itching to contribute much more. He’s reunited with Khama Billiat, who can create a number of scoring opportunities for the Colombian. If Castro’s fully focused, he can cause a lot of problems for opposition defenders.
Justin Shonga (Orlando Pirates)
The Zambian had a decent first season with the Buccaneers, but knows he could have scored much more had he taken the opportunities that were created for him throughout the campaign. He’s a talented young man who has his feet firmly on the ground, so he can only get better. His partnership with compatriot Mulenga will give defenders headaches.
Andrea Fileccia (Maritzburg United)
The Team of Choice exercised the extension in Fileccia’s contract following his impressive performances, Though not an out-an-out striker in coach Fadlu Davids’ formation, the Belgian forward bagged six goals in the league, all of which were in the second half of the season. If he starts the way he finished last term, then he’ll be a contender for the award.
Rodney Ramagalela (Polokwane City)
He shared the award with Percy Tau last season and he now has the chance to join Collins Mbesuma who has won the Golden Boot award on two occasions. With captain Jabulani Maluleke always delivering the passes from midfield, Ramagalela will have a good chance of challenging for the award.
