Orlando Pirates defender Happy Jele would love to have another crack at CAF Champions League glory after the class of 2013 lost out to Al Ahly in the final.
Pirates, coached by Roger de Sa at the time, got to the final almost 20 years after the class of 1995 conquered Africa.
Not since 2013 have Pirates participated in the tournament, but they will be back in the next edition after they finished second in the Absa Premiership last season.
“Yes, I would say I am very happy that the team will be going back to the Champions League. We deserve to be there. We showed in the previous years that we can compete with some of the big guns in Africa, so why not go back there and play again?
“We have to go there and show that we as South Africans deserve to play in that competition. The more we compete we will help the national team with players. So for us it’s going to be a good thing to go compete.”
Jele, who was honoured by Irvin Khoza with Bucs’ chairman award last week for his 12 years of service, says reaching the Champions League final is one of his best highlights in the famous black and white of the Buccaneers.
“Best memories? I have a lot of them, like winning the trebles and going to the Champions League final.”
