Maritzburg United captain Siyanda Xulu has told the club’s new signing Keagan Buchanan to let bygones be bygones and re-establish his career after a torrid time at Kaizer Chiefs.
Buchanan, who joined Chiefs in 2016 from Bloemfontein Celtic, was let go of by Amakhosi at the end of last season after only playing 10 games in two years at Naturena.
It was an especially disappointing stint for the midfielder given the high expectations that surrounded him after being awarded the coveted number 10 jersey on his arrival at the Soweto giants.
Xulu also only played 10 times for the Glamour Boys in two seasons after joining the club to much fan-fare on a five-year deal. He was likewise released by the Glamour Boys, but bounced back emphatically with Maritzburg last term by winning the PSL Defender of the Season award.
“I just told him [Buchanan] that it wasn’t in his powers to alleviate whatever happened at Chiefs,” Xulu said.
“I’ve been there before and I know it comes with a lot of pressure. Now it is clear to him that he has to prove everybody wrong. He has to prove that himself and do better as a player.
“Obviously I’m going to help him because I’ve been there before and I know the requirements.”
Buchanan, who has penned a three-year contract with the Team of Choice, is the second player to have worn the number 10 jersey at Chiefs and moved to Maritzburg after Mthokozisi Yende in 2012/13.
