Here's what will be on Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas's to-do list in the coming season

New Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas has his work cut out to restore the glory days at Naturena, so KickOff.com looks at what will be on the Italian’s to-do list heading into the new season.

1. Win trophies

It goes without saying that Solinas has to win trophies, or else he will bear the brunt of the supporters’ wrath. Chiefs are without a trophy in the last three seasons and hoping that their new coach will inspire them to glory. There’d be no better start than to win the MTN8. It’s the first competition of the season and it would give the players confidence to challenge for the Absa Premiership title.

2. Build a team around Billiat

Khama Billiat is Amakhosi’s marquee signing and management will be expecting Solinas to get the best out of the Zimbabwean international, after working hard to convince him to turn down overseas offers in favour of a move to Naturena. Billiat remains one of the most talented players in the league and he is the type of player Amakhosi missed last season to ensure they kill off opponents.

3. Sort out scoring problem

Chiefs are not short of strikers, with Bernard Parker, Ryan Moon, Gustavo Paez and Leonardo Castro to call on. What they need is a group of players who will not waste the chances midfielders create. Last season Amakhosi scored 27 goals in 30 matches, which is not good enough for a club that wants to win the title. Solinas has to work on the problem to make Chiefs a more ruthless side in front of goal.

4. Start the season well

It’s important for the coach to hit the ground running in the Absa Premiership, to avoid having to come from behind in the title race. Chiefs have shown that they cannot come from behind, so they have to ensure that they get as many points as possible from the start. Dropping points at home and getting too many draws, which was the story of last season, will not help their cause.

5. Balance domestic and continental football

CAF Confederation Cup football will only come next year, but it can prove to be a difficult period if Solinas does not manage his squad well. Travelling on the continent can take its toll on players, so the backroom staff will have to make sure that players are fresh for the final stretch in the league.
