SAFA boss Danny Jordaan confirms Banyana will contest Winnie Mandela International Challenge

Posted: 27 July 2018 Time: 09:45

SAFA president Danny Jordaan has confirmed Banyana Banyana will play in the first ever Winnie Mandela International Challenge this year in honour of the late struggle icon.

An opponent, date and venue has yet to be finalised for the new tournament.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the ex-wife of revered former South African President Nelson Mandela, passed away on April 2 at the age of 81 after being in and out of hospital since the start of 2018.

Before her death, SAFA spoke with her in December about launching a tournament under her name that is comparable to the Nelson Mandela Challenge, which has featured Bafana Bafana for the past 23 years.

“Banyana will play in the Winnie Mandela Challenge. In December of last year we met with Winnie Mandela and we agreed that we want to launch a women’s competition with Banyana calling it the Winnie Mandela International Challenge,” said Jordaan.

“This year will be the first and this year is the Nelson Mandela centenary celebration, so we’ll have to discuss to find the details and the date for that. And certainly we’ll play the Winnie Mandela Challenge as well.”

The Winnie Mandela International Challenge will serve as a charity fund-raiser, just like the Nelson Mandela Challenge.

The Mandela Challenge has been earmarked for November this year, having been scrapped in 2017 to accommodate a 2018 World Cup qualifying replay with Senegal after Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey was found guilty of match-fixing by FIFA.
