Kaizer Chiefs captain Siphiwe Tshabalala has revealed new coach Giovanni Solinas’s first words to him upon his arrival, and has promised to play his part as a senior player.
Chiefs have hired Solinas as a replacement for Steve Komphela, who has since joined Bloemfontein Celtic, as they target a turnaround from their dry run over the past three seasons.
The Italian tactician's appointment was confirmed three weeks before the start of the new season, but he still awaits a work permit.
However, the Amakhosi skipper has already taken it upon himself to try and make things easier for the former Free State Stars coach, who still remembers how ‘Shabba’ tormented his side during his two separate spells in Bethlehem.
“When he [Solinas] came he had a brief chat with me, and I’m not sure if he was joking or not, but he said when he was there [at Stars], I used to kill him. Now we’ll kill others with him,” said Tshabalala, who is ready to assume the responsibility of taking care of non-football matters for the new man in charge.
“I’ve always took it upon myself that I’m a senior player and I need to do more. When things don’t go well, I also need to raise my hand, take responsibility and protect the young ones,” he added.
“So, the mentality and thinking is still the same, I need to push myself as well and lead through my performance. I need to also help the coach, and he just needs to focus on his job instead of other things not related to football.
“That’s why we have a committee of senior players to help the team, the players and the coach as well.”
