Sandilands eager for Bucs comeback

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands is looking forward to building on the foundation he laid at the club last term.

Sandilands joined Pirates from Mamelodi Sundowns at the start of last season, making an immediate impact as he started the campaign ahead of his teammates Jackson Mabokgwane and Siyabonga Mpontshane.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper managed five clean sheets in his first 10 Absa Premiership games, before suffering an Achilles tendon injury in his side’s Telkom Knockout quarterfinal defeat to Polokwane City in November. He later sustained a finger injury that kept him out until April.

However, Sandilands takes plenty of stimulation from his promising start at the club that subsequently earned him Bucs' Golden Glove award, as he looks to pick up this season from where he left off last year.

“For me it was just a matter of just trying to be consistent and perform at a level that I know I’m able to perform at,” said Sandilands.

“Look, it was tricky. Obviously the season needed to get off to a good start because of the one before, but I was happy with the start, as I’ve said.

“It was just a matter of kicking on and building on that foundation, and this season will be a good opportunity to do that.”

Regaining his place will not be straightforward though, with The Buccaneers having since acquired the services of former Kaizer Chiefs keeper Brilliant Khuzwayo.

But, with Micho Sredojevic’s side set to be stretched across five different competitions on the domestic and continental scene this season, Sandilands believes the stiff competition bodes well for the team.

“Every team needs good depth and quality. It’s a long season ahead, and obviously a club like Pirates wants to challenge,” he added.

“It’s always good to have good, quality players in [the team] and it can only bode well for the future.”
