Will Jeremy Brockie's Shell Helix Cup goal for Mamelodi Sundowns open the floodgate's?

Posted: 23 July 2018 Time: 20:30

You could see in the way Jeremy Brockie celebrated his goal against Kaizer Chiefs in the Shell Helix Cup that it meant so much to him.

It was not spectacular, nor was it in an official game, but it’s a goal the New Zealand-born striker needed to boost his confidence after a dry spell.

And it’s come at just the right time, before the new season and when Sundowns are looking for someone who can bang in the goals following the departures of Khama Billiat and reigning PSL Footballer of the Season Percy Tau.

Brockie joined Sundowns in January and struggled to find his scoring touch. In fact, when he joined Sundowns, the striker had not found the back of the net since October 2017.

Now as the new season approaches, Brockie is determined to be the man Sundowns bank on to hit the back of the net regularly. He did a lot of running upfront and tried to cause problems for the Amakhosi defenders by holding up the ball to allow his midfielders enough time to join in the attack.

With Jose Ali Meza part of the team now – the new South American forward – Brockie has loads of work to do to ensure that he is the side’s number one striker, just as he was at SuperSport United.

He received praise from coach Pitso Mosimane after the match at FNB Stadium on Saturday, a sign that he could get more opportunities in the number nine role.
