Maboe has attracted widespread attention as the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament and Most Promising Player in 2017/18, with Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia currently studying offers for the Bafana Bafana international.

SuperSport gave Pieterse the green light to look for a new team after the club signed former University of Pretoria net-minder Washington Arubi.

Sundowns were initially thought to be running after the services of Ajax Cape Town keeper Brandon Petersen but the Brazilians reportedly baulked at the price tag slapped on the 23-year-old. Petersen was also previously on the wanted list of Orlando Pirates before they signed Brilliant Khuzwayo from Soweto rivals Chiefs.

According to a source close to Downs, management have been discussing recruiting Maboe and Pieterse.

"There has been discussions about both Maboe and Pieterse about the possibility of signing," says the source.

"There is still more weeks before the transfer window closes in August, so anything is possible."

Masandawana have lost star attackers Percy Tau and Khama Billiat in the off-season, but have signed Andile Jali, Toni Silva, Lyle Lakay, Jose Ali Meza and young defender Tristan Moses.
