Pitso Mosimane explains Mamelodi Sundowns' CAF Champions League defeat to AS Togo-Port

Posted: 23 July 2018 Time: 17:00

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane lamented his side’s CAF Champions League defeat to AS Togo-Port and says the pressure is now on to make it through the group stage of the event.

Despite their possessional dominance throughout the match, the Brazilians succumbed to a 1-0 defeat in Lomé last Tuesday as they paid the price for poor finishing in front of goal.

Mosimane conceded shock at the result after watching his side control proceedings on the afternoon, labelling it one of their easiest away games in the competition.

“It was an unbelievable game, hey. I could not believe that we lost that match but, football as it is, that’s what we got,” said Mosimane.

“I think it was one of the easiest away games we have ever played in the Champions League, but possession doesn’t win you games – you must score.”

Asked whether complacency perhaps played a part in their subdued showing, the former Bafana Bafana mentor explained that the players overestimated their opponents.

“They didn’t think it was easy; it came out easier. When it comes out easier then they relax, because normally when we go away they expect a tough game,” he explained.

“But we missed a lot of chances hey. I mean, if you don’t score those goals then you put yourself in a difficult position where you’ve got to fight to win the games now.”

Downs are now in a dire situation in the group, occupying bottom spot with two points from three games, while Wydad Casablanca and Horoya lead the standings with five points apiece.

With two home games and a trip to Tunisia in the waiting, ‘Jingles’ has stressed the need to pick up maximum points at home if they are still to progress from the group.

“It means we have to now win our home games. If you don’t win your home games, then it’s done hey – you’re under pressure, you have to win,” he emphasised.
