SuperSport United have released Nigerian defender Azubuike Egwuekwe with indications suggesting Bongani Khumalo will take his spot at Matsatsantsa.

Egwuekwe failed to make an impact in the single season he spent at the club following his signing from Finnish side KuPS. He made 13 appearances in 2017/18 and chipped in two goals.

Fellow centre-back Khumalo recently started training with SuperSport - who he won three league titles with from 2007 to 2010 - following the expiry of his contract with Bidvest Wits at the end of June.

According to a source at United, midfielder Kamogelo Mahlatse has also returned from a loan spell at National First Division outfit Ubuntu Cape Town.

"Egwuekwe is gone," says the source.

"The club is looking at signing Bongani Khumalo and another centre-back from Zimbabwe.

"The club has recalled back the youngster Kamo from Ubuntu."

SuperSport have already signed former Wits striker James Keene, ex-University of Pretoria goalkeeper Washington Arubi and defender Luke Fleurs from Ubuntu Cape Town.
