Kaizer Chiefs new signing Khama Billiat has distanced himself from the spotlight ahead of this weekend’s Shell Helix Ultra Cup showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Billiat joined Chiefs ahead of the 2018/19 season, ending a five-year stay with The Brazilians, where he helped the club to a historic maiden CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, Nedbank Cup, Telkom Knockout and three Absa Premiership titles.
For the first time since his departure, the 27-year-old will be coming up against his former employers in the colours of Amakhosi, when the do battle at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
However, Billiat insists the occasion will not be personal as he looks to help his new team further their preparations ahead of what is setting up to be an exciting season.
“It’s a big game, and it’s not about me but about the club, supporters, the chairman and everyone behind the team,” said Billiat.
“We want to do our best, we want to see how far we can go in preparing for the league, and yeah it’s a big test for us but we’re looking forward to it. The team is looking sharp, and everyone is just one happy family.”
Having been an integral figure at Chloorkop during his time at the club, one possible challenge might be that his former teammates would have first-hand knowledge of how to deal with his threat, but the Zimbabwean international is undeterred thereby.
“Everyone in the league knows everyone, we watch our videos and I’ve been playing here for quite a long time so I know them; we know each other; we’re friends,” he defended.
“So, that’s what makes football interesting, you have to come up with something [different] every time you play.”
Billiat is also relishing his reunion with Colombian striker Leonardo Castro, with whom he shared a fruitful trio alongside Keagan Dolly in the 2016/17 season when they were known as ‘CBD’.
“He’s a great player to play around with, I’ve missed him, I must say. Hopefully we will continue from where we left off working together,” he added.
“I know it’s a different team, we’ve got different tactics and we work differently, but I’m sure something can be worked out.”
