Maize Cup match report Kaizer Chiefs v Free State Stars 14 July 2018

Posted: 14 July 2018 Time: 15:01

Kaizer Chiefs defeated Free State Stars 6-5 on penalties to claim the Maize Cup title.

There were a few debuts for the AmaKhosi as Khama Billiat, Virgil Vries, Kabelo Mahlasela and Letlhogonolo Mirwa all started for the final.

Chiefs certainly looked the fresher of the two sides, having played on Saturday morning unlike Stars, who played the semi-final at 14h00.

Chiefs did go close to opening the scoring after 21 minutes but Mahlasela failed to hit the target from close range.

Eight minutes later, Chiefs were in front as Billiat's cross found Castro, who volleyed home at the far post.

Luc Eymael's grew into the game in the final 15 minutes but they were unable to bypass the Chiefs defence to test Vries.

Harris Tschilbou should have equalised for Stars on the hour-mark but his acrobatic effort from close range was tipped away by goalkeeper Vries.

Ea Lla Koto managed to get their equaliser with eight minutes left in the match when substitute Eleazar Rodgers slotted home for the second successive encounter.

However, neither club could find a winning goal in the closing stages of the second half, forcing the game into another penalty shoot-out.

Stars were unable to hold their nerve once again as Chiefs claimed a 6-5 win in the shoot-out to clinch the Maize Cup title.

Chiefs will now turn their focus to next week's Shell Helix Cup clash against Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs: Vries, Mathoho, Cardoso, Mirwa, Moleko, Ntshangase, Katsande,  Molongoane, Billiat, Mahlasela, Castro.

Stars: TBC.
