2018 World Cup match report Belgium v England 14 July 2018

Posted: 14 July 2018 Time: 14:45

Belgium ended their 2018 World Cup journey on a high note with a third-place finish following a 2-0 win over England on Saturday.

Unlike their group stage clash, both Belgium and England opted for their regular starters with a few tweaks in the battle for the bronze title.

The contest took off in full flight as Thomas Meunier, returning from suspension, side-footed home a cross from the left by Nacer Chadli after four minutes.

The Belgians made the earlier promise and edged close to another, but the exploits in goal from Jordan Pickford prevented Eden Hazard from a tight angle.

The English were making it a tough contest despite trailing. Captain Harry Kane could’ve drawn them level but after being set-up by Raheem Sterling, he shot wide from outside the box.

A beautiful cross into the box by Kieran Trippier looked destined for the head of John Stones until Jan Vertonghen managed to get his foot to it and steer it over his own crossbar on 51 minutes.

The best chance to draw level came when Eric Dier combined with Raheem Sterling, but attempts to chip an onrushing Thibaut Courtois came to nothing following a goal-line clearance by Toby Alderweireld.

In the closing stages, a handful of opportunities from various set-play scenarios found its way to Dier and Stones but the end finish lacked emphatically.

A brilliant piece of one-touch football from the Red Devils nearly led to something audacious after Meunier’s volley at the end instigated Pickford to beat it away.

Absent for most the game, Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne combined to allow the former lashing home the second for a third place finish and with that their best ever finish in the World Cup finals

Teams:

Belgium: Courtois, Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen, Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Chadli, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku.

England: Pickford, Dier, Stones, Maguire, Rose, Trippier, Kane, Sterling, Jones, Delph, Loftus-Cheek.
