Maize Cup match report Chippa United v Free State Stars 14 July 2018

Posted: 14 July 2018 Time: 13:34

Free State Stars advanced to the final of the Maize Cup after securing a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win over Chippa United.

Stars were first with a shot at goal after Sthembiso Dlamini cut in from the right but he fired way off target in the opening minutes on a rather disappointing pitch.

Chippa went close to breaking through as well, but a skewing header from a free-kick by Jabulani Shongwe came crashing off the post with Thabo Nthethe unable to tap home from the rebound.

Following a low tempo quarter hour with no shots on target, Stars missed a great chance to go in front when Sinethemba Jantjie failed to steer home a header with the goal gaping.

At the slow pace the game went about, it became increasingly difficult for either side to fashion any meaningful shots on goal.

Former Bidvest Wits striker Eleazar Rodgers was presented his first chance in the colours of Ea Lla Koto after a cross into the box, but his glancing header sailed wide.

The Easter Cape side then propped up their own opportunity, but Daine Klate’s half-cross cum shot struck the top of the crossbar as the clash looked destined for a penalty shootout.

So in the end, penalties would determine the eventual winner. And following misses apiece in the opening kickers, Stars went two up after successful conversion.

The Chilli Boys didn’t get on the scoreboard until Klate went straight down the middle but the advantage still lied with Stars.

Leading 3-1 Chris Komane was handed the chance to keep Chippa in the contest but he failed to make it count allowing Stars to set-up a meeting with Kaizer Chiefs in the final.

Teams:

Chippa: Akpeyi, Tlolane, Nthethe, Nsabiyumva, Makobeka, Mayambela, Komane, Mdlinzo, Seakanyeng, Shongwe, Mbenyane.

Stars: Sangare, Mobbie, Keita, Mahamutsa, Phungwayo, Dlamini, Makhaula, Masehe, Jantjie, Rodgers, Tchilimbou.
