Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane has outlined his personal goals ahead of the 2018/19 season, and has welcomed the competition from within the squad.

Zwane is amongst the longest-serving members of the current Sundowns squad, having joined the team from then-Vodacom League side Vardos FC in 2011.

The 28-year-old winger, however, has acknowledged he is yet to really reach the heights he was tipped to achieve as a 21-year-old.

Having enjoyed abundant success with The Brazilians as a team, Zwane is ready to focus on his personal growth and step up his efforts amid the departure of Khama Billiat and imminent exit of Percy Tau, who is on the verge of joining Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I obviously have to set goals, and even last season I did so but they were not achieved. So, this season I need to put in more effort,” Zwane tells KickOff.com.

“I want to be nominated for, maybe, Player of the Season, Midfielder of the Season or Top Goal Scorer – those are the things that I’d like to achieve this coming season.”

The Bafana Bafana international will not have it easy though, with the club having brought in the likes of Gaston Sirino and Toni Silva to add depth on the right flank.

‘Mshishi’, as he is affectionately known, is undeterred by the competition that awaits, and is adamant it could ultimately help him raise his game.

“For me the competition is nice because it always keeps me on my toes. Whenever I get a chance, I have to make sure that I make use of it,” he adds.

“I think it’s better to have strong competition than to play where there is no competition, because obviously you’ll relax as a player.

“But if you know your place is not guaranteed you will always work harder, and if you don’t play you will always do extra work to be ready for your chance when it comes.”
