Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus transfer from Real Madrid fueled by 'obsession' of beating Lionel Messi

Cristiano Ronaldo's club record move to Juventus is claimed to have been fueled by his obsession with beating FC Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo's nine-year stay has come to an end with the two club's confirming a club record €100m (R1.57b) deal on Tuesday.

While many believed it would be the end of the constant comparisons with Lionel Messi, who've dominated LaLiga and the Ballon d'Or honours since arriving in 2009 - a former teammate has suggested otherwise.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs claims the 33-year-old's 'desire for a new challenge', is an attempt to prove he can dominate a third major league in Europe.

"Cristiano is obsessed with beating Messi," he told ITV. "Now he has the argument of having won in England, Spain and with Portugal, so he wants to say 'I'll do it in Italy as well.'

"He can use it in his favour in the argument of who is better between them.

Giggs acknowledged that it will not be easy for Ronaldo in Serie A, but also said it will look good when he reflects on his career in the future.

"Having Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus on your CV is something special," Giggs said. "But it will be a challenge for him."
