Khoza responds to talk of 18-team league

Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza has cooled talk of possibly increasing the number of teams in the league to appease all parties involved in the ongoing Tendai Ndoro saga.

Numerous calls for the PSL to increase its number of teams to 18 – or even 20 – have been bandied about in recent weeks following Ajax Cape Town’s court appeal of the SAFA Arbitration award.

Advocate William Mkhari SC in May ruled that Ajax were to be docked seven points for fielding ineligible striker Ndoro, who had contravened Rule 5.3 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players.

However, this was set aside earlier this week when Judge Denise Fisher of the South Gauteng High Court ruled in favour of Ajax, before referring Ndoro’s eligibility debate to the FIFA Players' Status Committee (PSC).

The PSL, meanwhile, following an Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, have decided to appeal this judgement pending an extraordinary meeting of the NSL Board of Governors (BOG).

Asked whether the expansion of the league might be a possibility, Khoza said this has not even been discussed by the Exco, but could not rule out such talks in the BOG meeting set for next week Thursday.

“Well that is a matter for the Board of Governors [to decide on], but I don’t want to inform that because the rules are clear on how you get involved in the premier division,” said Khoza.

“So, that’s why that matter was not even on the table today [Thursday], it was never discussed. We don’t know indeed if the Board of Governors will discuss it.

“But here it was never discussed because there’s nothing that informs that. The judgement was clear, the other request that was made by the people that took the matter to court [Ajax] was never granted.

“[The judgement] does not say the PSL is wrong. It just says the body that dealt with the matter was not the right body; the right body is the FIFA PSC, that’s why there’s nothing that encourages us to even consider [an 18-team league] as an option for now.”
