Tunisia snatch victory in final group clash

Tunisia came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Panama in their last Group G encounter at the 2018 World Cup on Thursday night.

The match was evenly poised in the opening exchanges, with both sides signalling their intent to get goals early on.

However, Tunisia were emerging as a better team after a quarter of an hour as they dominated possession, but they could not really break down the Panama defence.

The Central Americans took the lead against the run of play in the 33rd minute after Jose Rodriguez’s strike from just outside the box took a huge deflection off Yassine Meriah and sailed into the back of the net for an official own-goal.

Seven minutes before half-time, Fakhreddine Ben Youssef almost netted the equaliser for Tunisia with a header inside the box but his effort sailed narrowly wide.

Los Canaleros were defending in numbers in the closing minutes of the first stanza and managed to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Ben Youssef did eventually find the reply for the Carthage Eagles five minutes after the break with a simple finish inside the box following some crisp attacking play from the North Africans.

Wahbi Khazri made it 2-1 for Tunisia in the 65th minute with a finish at the back post against the run of play for his second goal of the World Cup campaign.

Panama were not sitting back with a quarter of an hour left to play, going on an all-out attack as they pushed for a point.

In the end, the Africans were never really threatened in the remaining stages of the half as they end the tournament with their first points in Russia, although they are still eliminated after finishing third in Group G, above rock-bottom Panama, who end without a point.
