2018 World Cup Group H match report Senegal v Colombia 28 June 2018

Posted: 28 June 2018 Time: 16:48

Colombia sealed passage into the knockout rounds of the 2018 World Cup while condemning Senegal to elimination following a 1-0 win on Thursday evening.

Colombia had it all to do to book a spot in the last 16, with Senegal only needing a point to advance.

The South Americans had the first shot on target after Juan Quintero’s free-kick earned them a corner.

It appeared as if Senegal had the chance to go ahead when they were awarded a penalty after Sadio Mane was clipped by Davidson Sanchez in the opening 10 minutes.

However, after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee, Serbian referee Milorad Mazic overturned his own decision and signaled only a drop ball.

Senegal didn’t let their heads down, though, and continued pressurising, with a couple of shots from Keita Balde and Ismaila Sarr.

The Colombians were forced into an early change and brought on Luis Muriel for James Rodriguez on 30 minutes.

Senegal were pushed back in the early stages of the second half, but had the chance to go ahead when Mane lined up for a free-kick but he slipped heavily on the turf and eventually skewed wide.

Colombia also found a few half-chances when Radamel Falcao came close to heading them ahead from a corner but sent his effort wide on 65 minutes.

The Samara Arena was then sent into a frenzy when Yerry Mina headed Colombia ahead from a corner on 74 minutes.

Senegal tried desperately to get an instant equaliser but David Ospina prohibited Mbaye Niang from point-blank range in the final moments.

The Colombians eventually finished top of the Group, while Senegal's campaign comes to an end as Japan progress on the Fair Play rules, having picked up fewer yellow cards than the Teranga Lions.
