Guinea captain Naby Keita is aiming to emulate the career of Steven Gerrard after the Liverpool legend handed him the iconic number eight jersey at his unveiling with the Premier League side.

Keita, 23, completed his highly anticipated transfer to Liverpool after agreeing the deal from RB Leipzig back in August.

The captain of the Guinea national team is expected to fill the void of departed Emre Can and has since been rewarded the number eight jersey - last won by former skipper Gerrard.

Upon his unveiling at the Merseyside outfit, Keita explained his style of play he will bring to the Reds - while discussing the surprise gesture made by Gerrard himself.

"Firstly I am somebody that plays in a defensive role and we need to start with that," the midfielder who's style of play has often drawn comparisons to N'Golo Kante told LFC TV.

"But then I need to bring the ball forward and help the attack. I've always got a desire to win - I believe I'm a winner."

On Gerrard presenting him with the number eight; "It was an incredible day for me. He [Gerrard] gave me the number eight jersey. When it happened, it was a surprise and I didn't expect it.

"When he came in, I looked and him and said 'Wow' because he is a legend. He is somebody who always showed respect, who gave his all on the pitch, somebody who is loved here.

"If somebody like that gives you his shirt number, it's not to play around with, it is to try and do as much as he did - that's my motivation."

Keita scored 14 goals and registered 13 assists in 58 Bundesliga games during his two years in Germany.
