2018 World Cup match report Korea Republic v Germany 27 June 2018

Posted: 27 June 2018 Time: 16:43

World champions Germany failed to progress to the knockout stages at the 2018 World Cup after losing 2-0 to Korea Republic.

After a dramatic late win over Sweden, Die Mannschaft’s World Cup hopes were still alive heading into today's clash but they needed to beat Korea to advance to the knockout stages.

The Asians nearly bagged an early goal when Manuel Neuer spilled a free-kick from Jung Woo-young, while Son Heung-min was unable to follow up.

Returning to the line-up in place of the suspended Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels showed cleverness and trickery in the box but failed to find the net from a corner on 38 minutes.

Germany’s struggles to break down the Koreans continued in the second half, but they were close to going in front as a header from Mesut Ozil drew an outstanding save from Cho Hyun-woo.

As news came in of Sweden leading Mexico, tensions were fever point for the defending champions who faced group stage elimination for the first time over 80 years.

Joachim Low brought on more firepower to shackle the Koreans resolve with the arrival of Thomas Muller.

Long-serving striker Mario Gomez came off the bench to add more steel up front, but the closest he came to a goal was a weak header straight at Hyun-woo.

Identical to the first half, Hummels came close to finding the net for Germany once again but he was unable to direct a cross past Cho four minutes to the end.

The four-time World champions fell behind in stoppage time as Kim Young-woo became the hero for the Asians with a close-range finish, after the referee consulted with VAR to overturn to the linesman's decision.

The defeat was sealed for three minutes in added time when Neuer was caught out playing in-field, thus allowing Son to race ahead and finish into an empty net.
