World Cup winner on Messi struggles

Former FIFA World Cup and Ballon d'Or winner Kaka has made an interesting observation explaining why five-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi is struggling to make an impact with Argentina in Russia.

Messi, 31, is widely considered as one of the greatest players of all time due to his exploits with FC Barcelona.

However, international success with Argentina has eluded him over his career, which has been highlighted in Russia as they face a humiliating early exit.

And former Brazil playmaker Kaka feels the tactical set-up that allows Messi to flourish with the Blaugrana is a telling factor.

"Messi is going through a difficult period with Argentina and this shows the importance of the group in soccer," said Kaka, as quoted by ESPN.

"He is someone who strengthens those around him, but when it's not working he also starts to struggle.

"It's quite surprising that against Nigeria, this struggling Argentina side could still qualify, but we'll see what happens."
