Uruguay finished top of Group A after dispatching 10-man Russia 3-0 in Match Day 3 at the 2018 World Cup on Monday evening.
Luis Suarez grabbed the lead for Uruguay in the 10th minute with a clever free-kick that fooled goalkeeper Roman Akinfeev and sailed into the bottom corner.
The Sky Blues doubled their lead in the 23rd minute after Diego Laxalt’s strike from outside the box took a huge deflection off Denis Cheryshev and sailed into the back of the net, 2-0.
Oscar Tabarez’s charges were dominating the encounter, while Russia were all over the place at the back as they failed to recover from a poor start.
Things went from bad to worse as Russia were reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute, with Igor Smolnikov picking up his second yellow card in the match.
Uruguay were comfortable having the advantage of playing with an extra man and were threatening to add more goals, but they could not carve out another chance before the break, where the led 2-0.
Russia were more enterprising in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza but they lacked penetration in the last third to trouble the Uruguayan defence.
Stanislav Cherchesov’s troops picked themselves up and played with a lot more energy after the hour but somehow they got unstuck in the final third of the pitch.
Edinson Cavani eventually got the third goal for Uruguay in the last minute of regulation time with a close-range finish after Diego Godin's initial header was saved.
