2018 World Cup Group H match report Japan v Senegal 24 June 2018

Japan and Senegal could not be separated in a Group H clash after they played to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the 2018 World Cup on Sunday evening.

Senegal took the lead in the 12th minute after Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima’s poor clearance ricocheted off Sadio Mane at the near post and sailed into the back of the net, 0-1.

The Lions of Teranga were controlling possession after 25 minutes, looking to beat the Blue Samurai with their pace up front.

However, Takashi Inui equalised for Akira Nishino’s charges in the 33rd minute with curling low strike that found the bottom corner.

Aliou Cisse’s men continued to venture forward with pace that was troubling the Japan defence, although they were unable to carve out clear-cut chances for the rest of the half.

The match was evenly poised in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza, with both sides going at each other without restraint.

However, the Japanese were edging closer to going ahead after the hour mark, stretching the Senegalese with their direct approach.

Moussa Wagué eventually made it 2-1 for the Lions of Teranga with 20 minutes remaining after making a galloping run on the right wing before smashing a strike home at the near post.

Substitute Keisuke Honda got the Blue Samurai back into the match seven minutes later with a strike into a gaping net following a mix-up in the box from Senegal, 2-2.

Senegal were living dangerously towards the end, playing deep in their own half, but they managed to hold on for a precious point in Group H.
