Ryan Moon to benefit from Khama Billiat's arrival at Kaizer Chiefs?

About to enter into his third season at Naturena, is Kaizer Chiefs striker Ryan Moon ready to stake his claim as the club’s main out-and-out striker?

Chiefs are set for a new dawn under a new coach, who has yet to be revealed but will be looking to quickly turn things around for the club. But in order to do so he will need someone dependable to lead their first line of attack.

Not to downplay the midfield, defensive and goalkeeping departments, but the source of goals is arguably the main point of concern for any side looking to win silverware.

To this end Amakhosi have recruited a proven attacking force in Khama Billiat, and the Zimbabwean playmaker will be expected to rattle the net just as many times as he provides opportunities for his peers in the final third.

With Leonardo Castro having yet to establish himself in the Amakhosi system, after arriving just six months ago, and Gustavo Paez having struggled to deliver as hoped, young Moon would seem to be the favourite to benefit most from Billiat’s penchant for unloading defence-splitting passes.

The 21-year-old, who arrived from Maritzburg United’s reserve team in July 2016, has grown in stature and confidence following his sizeable contribution last season.

Moon managed four goals in his first five starts of the campaign, before waning after being dropped from the starting line-up for the Soweto Derby, which Chiefs lost 3-1 to arch rivals Orlando Pirates.

The lanky centre-forward has also caught the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, and featured in both national team camps for the Four Nations tournament and recent COSAFA Cup this year.

It is worth noting though, that Billiat and Castro previously enjoyed a fruitful partnership on the other side of the Jukskei River for Mamelodi Sundowns, where they formed part of the menacing trio known as ‘CBD’, which also included France-based Keagan Dolly.

Moon will have to develop a similar telepathic relationship with the former Ajax Cape Town star if he is to prove his capabilities of playing a bigger role in the Chiefs attack next season.
